Happy Resurrection Day!
This holiday is typically known as Easter. Unfortunately, that name is derived from the Babylonian goddess of fertility, Ishtar. Given that she was a fertility goddess, that led to the eggs and bunnies that have become synonymous with Easter traditions today.
Today celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This single event is at the crux of the Christian faith. The apostle Paul alluded to the importance of the resurrection in his first letter to the believers in Corinth. “And if Christ had not been raised, your faith is worthless, you are still in your sins” (1 Cor. 15:17). Therefore, if Christ had not been raised, the sin debt would not have been paid. Jesus died on the cross to pay the sin debt, and raised from the dead to ratify the deal.
Many people celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus, and rightly so, but Christmas would be meaningless without Resurrection Sunday! The cradle would have been meaningless without the cross. Likewise, Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross would have been meaningless without the empty tomb. The resurrection validated Jesus’ claims of deity, as well as conquered death, thereby providing hope of eternal life for those who believe and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. As David Crowder says, this is shouting grounds!
The resurrection is not only the crux of the Christian faith, it is also the pivotal point of all eternity, history past and future to come. From creation, God set a plan of salvation into motion. Throughout the Old Testament (as well as extra-biblical sources), the world looked forward to the coming Messiah. Since Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection, the world looks back on this event, while looking forward to eternity. All of eternity for mankind rests on this one single event of the resurrection of Jesus.
On a personal level, Jesus’ resurrection provides hope for a future resurrection of those who have believed in Him. Additionally, we experience a daily resurrection as He brings to us newness of life each day. Again, using the apostle Paul’s words to the Corinthians, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature, the old things passed away, behold, new things have come” (2 Cor. 5:17). That is so exciting!!!
As I reflect on the sacrifice on the cross, and celebrate the resurrection this year, I am reminded of these daily resurrections in my own life. Whatever mistakes I have made in my past, are just that….they are in my past. Today is a new day, with newness of life, newness of joy, newness of grace. God’s mercies truly are new every morning.
One evidence of this newness is actually this blog. I had written a few blog entries a few years back on a blog entitled “Outside the Box Faith” through blogger. You can still read the blog posts on that if you would like to. But, I haven’t written anything in a few years.
Certain events happened during those few years that really took me away from the plan that God has for me, which is writing and telling my story. Well, I took a few creative writing classes recently, and now I am back to writing. So, this in itself is a resurrection experience.
What about you? Have you surrendered to Jesus Christ as your Lord for salvation? The Bible says, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation” (Rom. 10:9-10).
If you have never done that before, I encourage you to not wait any longer. Make today your day of salvation. You can have a resurrection experience today.
If you are already saved, I encourage you to celebrate the resurrection and embrace the newness of life that He gives us daily.
HE IS NOT HERE, FOR HE HAS RISEN, JUST AS HE SAID (Mt. 28:6)
Happy Resurrection Day!!!!
